"I Remember" - Evening Primrose (2026)
Project Type
Musical
Date
March 13, 2026
Location
SDSU Experimental Theatre
With a score by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Goldman, this work was adapted for the stage from the ABC Stage 67 Episode as one of six MFA Capstone Projects. It was Adapted and Directed by Anthony Methvin, a recent graduate student from the San Diego State University MFA Musical Theatre Program.
The primary question that this particular adaptation posed was analyzing the degree by which the subtext of the original story would shift when the female love-interest, Ella, was changed to be a queer male character. In other words, how much does the love story, and its seed change when the romantic plotline is gender-bent to represent a queer narrative? An interpretation of this work, then, as a queer love story completely shifts the narrative throughline of the protagonist, Charles, and his now love interest, "Alan".
Directed and Adapted by Anthony Methvin
with Music Direction by Ronald Councell and Robert Meffe
